Hello, friends.

It seems like yesterday that I was sending you the July prayer email, but here we are in August.  Thank you so very much for your prayers for the Auburn Wesley Foundation.  We have definitely been seeing the results!  I’ll share some of those praises with you, but get your kneepads ready, we have a lot to keep praying for.

* Thank you for praying for the staff, student council, and leadership teams as they met last week to finish up plans for this semester.  It was all good.

* You prayed for our Freshman Dinner as students returned to Auburn.  Well, last Sunday we had about 200 students at Wesley for dinner and many stayed into the night playing games and getting to know one another.  Yes, numbers are good, but building that Christian fellowship and community is the best part.  Aside from having freshmen come together on Sunday night, a new thing started.  We had class groups meet to fellowship, so that there is a chance for sophomores, juniors, and seniors to separate from others and come together and bond as a class.  Those were great, and will continue throughout the year.

* In addition to a successful weekend before classes started on Monday, the first Wednesday night dinner and Bible studies were last night.  Praise the Lord for last night!  There were over 180 students here.  Eight Bible studies were well attended afterwards, so I’d say the night was a success.  Please continue to pray for Wednesday night dinners and Bible studies.

* Tonight, 8/20, is the first Freshman Community group.  Our new freshmen leaders are excited to reach out to these “new guys” and guide them into the start of a college experience that glorifies the Lord.  Little do these freshmen know that they are building friendships that will last a lifetime.  Please pray for the freshmen as they balance school and everything else and decide to get to Wesley tonight with all the other activities out there. Pray for the freshmen leaders.  They’ve planned and prayed, and it’s time to move into action!  Also, some small groups from local churches are getting the chance to give as they step in and prepare dinner for the freshmen on some weeks.  Pray that this is a blessing to these groups as well as the students.  Home-cooked meals for free, wahoo!  (Tell that to the freshmen you know.)

* This Saturday, 8/22, is a big day for the ministry.  It is Super Missions Saturday, with Y’all loha that evening.  Many students have already signed up to work with SMS on local projects.  Pray for safety and the community that is built when people work together to help others.  Thought I don’t usually mention all the socials for prayer, Y’all loha is the first big fellowship activity of the year.  It’s a great way to start!

* Another important meal is being served Sunday night, 8/23.  We’ll be hosting a dinner for transfer students at 6:30 in the coffee house upstairs.  When students transfer in after beginning college somewhere else, it is sometimes hard to get plugged in and feel connected.  Let us pray that those new to Auburn get the word and come to Wesley this Sunday and that things go smoothly.

* Sunday night is also the first worship service of the semester.  As you probably know, every Sunday night during school, we have Sunday night worship.  Except for the occasional outdoor worship, it is held in our auditorium, which undergoes a wonderful transformation on Sunday afternoon.  Please pray for the new worship bands and for our 3 ministers (David Goolsby, Emily Burch, and Phillip Hernandez) as they prepare each week to lead worship.  Pray for the audio and visual team and for all the setup and teardown included.  Pray for the students to attend and to be blessed as they worship God and draw closer to Christ.  You are invited to pray our benediction around 9:00 on Sunday nights “with Wesley”.  It
is listed at the end of this email for those of you who are not alumni.

* This year is pretty exciting, as we put into motion many plans that have been discussed for years. Students will be baking cookies on Tuesday, 8/25, then cookie week begins on the 26th.  What is that?  A great way for Wesley students to “love thy neighbor”.  Wesley students will be finding ways to reach out to their physical neighbors in their dorms and apartment complexes and offering them cookies.  What a great way to meet people!  I’m sure you see many ways to pray for this event.

* D- groups will be starting soon.  We look forward to those new groups forming and old ones continuing.  Discipleship groups are those small groups that come together to study great books and form accountability with one another.  Sign-ups are going on through Wednesday, 9/2.  D-groups will have a retreat the night of 9/11, so please keep that special time in your prayers.

* Students will be reaching out to the community as they lead worship at His Place on 9/8.  Many have been blessed in the past as they worship together and share with men who are coming out of some tough times at that wonderful local ministry.

* Another outreach at Wesley is the tent during football season.  Pray that set-up and all involved with that runs smoothly and that there is a great time of fellowship among students, parents, and alumni.  (Information on the tent is near the bottom of this email.)

* Please continue to pray daily for this ministry.  Intramurals, socials, small groups, dance team, worship jam, ping pong – something is happening around here nearly 24/7!

* Please be in prayer on September 2 for Rev. David Goolsby.  He is having surgery on that day to fuse his ankle bone.  Pray for the doctor and nurses.  Pray that this surgery is successful in removing his pain and enabling him to walk better.  He’ll be in the hospital for several days, then recuperating for weeks.  In case you  don’t know, David is the director of the Auburn Wesley Foundation and works for our conference with all of the Wesley Foundations.

This section of the email is for prayer requests that are specific for our Auburn Wesley alumni.  Please let me know when you have something you’d like our Wesley family and friends to pray for.

* Karl and Christine Dawson Schaefer (’98) proudly welcomed William Edward “WES” Schaefer into the world at 5:05 AM on June 11.  He was 5 weeks early and after a little while in the NICU, he is home and looks great!  His big sisters are Genny (11) and Phoebe-Jean (2).  Congratulations!

* Baret Brining Melton shared with me news about her brother, another Wesley alum: Zach Brining (’00), and his wife, Rebecca just had a baby on june 2… eva claire was 8 lbs. 1 oz. and 21″ long.

* Please be in prayer for Michelle McPeters Granberry (’92) and her family.  Michelle’s stepdad, Bruce, passed away July 28th after complications from his back surgery.  Our sympathy goes out to Michelle and Glenn (’94) and their family.

* Please be in prayer for Harrison Strom (’04) as he is serving our country in Afghanistan.  He is scheduled to come back home in November.

* This note from Jay Woods (’05):  August 6th, 2009 at 1029 pm, Gabriel Matthew Woods entered this world at 20.4 inches long, and 9lbs, 5 oz. Nina (Fitzgerald Woods, ‘06) is doing much better, after having taken 15 units of blood just to live because of complications with the delivery. We had a scare, almost lost her, but by the grace of God, she made it, and got to hold little Gabe for the first time yesterday (Monday, 8/10). Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

* This note from Jim (’05 ) and Amy Clements Pickard (’05 ): After many ups and downs and a long wait we welcomed our beautiful baby boy, Bradley Eugene Pickard. He was born August 6 at 9:58pm and weighed 6lb 9oz. Our adoption won’t be finalized for another month or so. Throughout meeting this birthmom and getting to know each other, God gave us all a peace we had never felt before. I pray everyone would consider adoption. It is the hardest and most rewarding process you will EVER go through. God has blessed us beyond belief.  Congratulations again – Amy just graduated summa cum laude from Jefferson State Community College in Veterinary Technology.

Wesley benediction (from Jude):
Now to Him who is able to keep you
Who is able to keep you from stumbling
And to make you dwell in the presence
Of His glory, blameless with great joy.

To the only God, our Saviour
And to Jesus Christ our Lord,
Be the glory, majesty, dominion, and power
Before all time, now and forever.

Amen!
